What's New: Choose Your Topic, Smarter Conversations

We just shipped a major update to MononcleAI. Based on feedback from our growing community, we've added topic selection, smarter corrections, and conversations that adapt to your level in real time. Here's what to expect the next time you tap the mic.

Pick what you want to talk about

When you start a new session, you'll now see six topic options right on the pre-session screen:

• 🎲 Surprise me lets Mononcle pick (this is the default, and how it used to work)
• 🍽 Food & Drink covers Québécois food culture: poutine, tourtière, la cabane à sucre
• 💼 Daily Life is about work, routines, errands, and your morning coffee at Tim's
• 🎯 Hobbies covers sports, music, movies, and whatever you do on weekends
• 🏒 Quebec Culture dives into la Saint-Jean, hockey, Québécois music, and traditions
• 📖 Grammar is for when you want to drill specific structures like particle-tu questions or "faque"

Just tap one before you start. If you don't pick, "Surprise me" is selected by default, so the experience stays the same unless you want to steer it.

Corrections that give you time to practice

One of the most common things we heard from early users was that Mononcle would correct a mistake and then immediately move on to a new question, all in the same breath. There was no pause to actually try the correction.

That's fixed now. When Mononcle corrects you, he says the correct phrase and then waits. You repeat it. He gives you feedback. Then he moves on. Simple, but it makes a big difference for actually retaining what you learn.

Conversations that match your level

MononcleAI now adjusts to your level automatically from your very first response. There's no placement test, no settings to configure. Mononcle listens to how you speak and adapts.

If you're just starting out, expect shorter sentences, simpler vocabulary, and more English when you need it. If you're already comfortable in French, Mononcle will push you with faster speech, joual expressions, and more complex grammar.

The key thing: it happens naturally within the conversation. You won't even notice it adjusting. It just feels like talking to someone who gets where you're at.

Less interruption

We also tuned the voice detection so that small acknowledgments like "hmm", "ok", or "d'accord" no longer cut Mononcle off mid-sentence. He'll finish his thought, and then it's your turn. The conversation flows a lot more naturally now.

Tips for getting the most out of your session

• Find a quiet spot. Background noise can trip up the voice detection. Even a hallway works better than a busy café.
• Don't be afraid to mess up. Mononcle's job is to correct you. The more mistakes you make, the more you learn.
• Try a specific topic. If "Surprise me" feels too random, pick Food or Daily Life for a more focused conversation.
• Use Grammar mode for drills. It's the fastest way to learn Québécois-specific structures that you won't find in any textbook.
• Come back daily. Five minutes a day beats one hour a week. Language learning is about consistency.
